'King of Pop,' Michael Jackson, dead at 50: A Look at his Life and Legacy

The world is left silent, mourning the loss of King of Pop, Michael Jackson—who died yesterday at the age of 50 in his Holmby Hills estate in Los Angeles, CA.

While the world waits to hear the official autopsy report as to why Michael Jackson died so suddenly, let us take a moment to reflect on his life, legacy and the fashion influences he left behind. Although Michael Jackson is best known as the ‘King of Pop’ for his musical contributions, he will also be remembered for his influences on pop-culture and fashion—which moved an entire world.

Michael Jackson was born Michael Joseph Jackson on August 29th, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, the seventh child of what would be known as a large family of performers. He first entered the entertainment arena at the age of 11 as the lead singer of The Jackson 5—but it wasn’t until later that this young bright-eyed child would go solo and break out into his own, becoming a legend.
The man and legend reached out to fans across the globe and brought together many cultures & generations through his music and his influences. He held the title for the best-selling record of all time for ‘Thriller,’ which catapulted him into fame and brought him to mainstream Americana. Moreover, MTV began playing his music videos regularly—a groundbreaking move, given that Michael Jackson was the first African-American to be featured on the network.
It was through the media such as MTV, among numerous radio, print and television outlets all over the world that Michael Jackson was able to make his mark and touch millions of people. Michael Jackson moved many through his songs but he also changed the face of the music-industry, pop-culture and fashion forever.

Michael’s mark in the music industry not only consisted of hit songs and catchy beats but he also changed the way that an artist commanded the stage. He was a charismatic singer who captivated fans by performing pop hits along with choreographed dance moves, like his signature ‘moonwalk.’ He also transformed the meaning of the music video, creating videos that served as mini-movies to include a story behind the song—such as the now legendary ‘Thriller’ video that features a fright night theme.

Along with the legendary musical contributions that Michael left us with, he also left a mark in popular culture and fashion. He gave fans and fellow musical artists an over-the-top personality that exemplified world fame, record breaking hits, groundbreaking sales, controversy, and even eccentricity. Furthermore, this larger-than-life celebrity took on new meaning when it came to fashion, as Michael was bold and single-handedly unique—and he wasn’t afraid to take risks and stand tall on stage in costume.

Michael’s trademark style consisted of sequins, military inspired uniforms, stark white socks, and black shoes—fashioned with a signature single white glove and black fedora. What's more, who could forget the iconic 80’s look that Michael sported wearing a red zippered leather jacket, mirrored aviator shades and his signature glove?

Overall, Michael captivated many with his larger-than-life stage presence, his signature ‘moonwalk,’ his theatrical fashion, and his dance beats. He will be greatly missed for his talent and influences but his legacy will last forever through his fans and fellow musical artists.

May we be ready for the place of eternity’s doorstep when we find ourselves in the same stage of live as Michael.
